The Happy Vanishing

Where Rails Meet Sails by The Happy Vanishing: Assisted by the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program, Chad (programming, synthesizer, acoustic guitar, bass, vocals) has produced and engineered an album fusing folk, electronica, and rock, laced with dreamy brooding atmosphere and featuring themes of melancholy. This album also features guest appearances from some of Tacoma’s finest art-rock talents, including Laura Arellano (vocals), John Walker of John Walker and the Hitchhikers (keyboards), Kizzume of The Mercury Rising (vocals), Kate Monthy of MLK Ballet (backing vocals), and Dave Miner of Free Jazz Tacoma (saxophone). A follow-up EP is currently in production.

Sixteen artists funded by Tacoma Arts Commission
The Tacoma Arts Commission recently announced funding recommendations to support the contributions of 16 individual artists in Tacoma.

The Tacoma Arts Commission creates this type of financial support through its Tacoma Artists Initiative Program. This program was established in 1999 to assist artists in generating new work and sharing their talent with the public.

“There was a prominent change in the applications we received this year, specifically in film, the performing arts and especially dance,” said Phillip Hill, Tacoma Arts Commission chair. “We seem to have crossed an important artistic threshold due to the variety of individuals and the unique and important works that they’re creating in our city.”

The Tacoma Arts Commission received 24 applications requesting $106,123 in funding. Sixteen artists spanning visual, media, literary, performance and interdisciplinary arts were funded at a total of $45,000.

Funded artists are Carla Barragan, Terese Cuff, Kyle Dillehay, Justin Gorman, Scott Gruber, Chad Hagedorn, Justin Hahn, Janet Marcavage, Kevin Miller, Betty Ragan, Elise Richman Holly Senn, Lucas Smiraldo, Katherine Stricker, Josephine A. Zmolek, and Paul Zmolek.

The BareFoot Collective presents Habitation (February 20-22), an evening of concert dance collaborations by Gina Bolles and Carrie Goodnight. The evening featured local music by The Happy Vanishing, San Diego-based somebodies dance theatre, and the work of Eugene artists Ian Coronado, Valerie Ifill, and Kyle Sorensen. Habitation takes the audience on an exploration of the two studio spaces at Barefoot in Tacoma, WA. The concert weaves four choreographic styles together in a variety of quirky physical environments.
