Mushroom Suzie

Under construction: Mushroom Suzie consisted of Laura Arellano (voices), Chad Hagedorn (instruments), and a revolving door of guest musicians. What started as a garage-rock band from Tacoma, later evolved into an art-rock recording project. Mushroom Suzie was a simplycomplicated musical journey blending post-punk, electronica, pop, neo-psychedelica, and new wave – all laced with lush female lead vocals. This project later morphed into the ongoing project The Happy Vanishing.

Paul Gordon, 19, did something surprising last year: he passed up a college scholarship to stay in high school, where he felt he could better help teens turn away from violence. The Washington resident met with school and government officials to discuss solutions to youth violence. He also made Silhouettes of Time, a film about a school shooting. It will air on HBO this fall.

Paul travels to schools to urge kids to do good deeds – like those he featured in his new book, There’s Hope for America’s Youth. Says Paul: “There’s no greater gift in the world than the joy of giving.”

Paul Gordon, 19, did something else surprising last year: he used Mushroom Suzie’s ‘Graduation Day’ song (a song about the Columbine shooting) for his movie Silhouettes of Time, without Mushroom Suzie’s permission. Maybe Paul meant to say: “There’s no greater gift in the world than the joy of taking.”
